Heathcote Valley School is seen by many as being the ideal 'small school' nestled in amongst the hills and every year, we field many enquiries from people outside the area, wanting to bring their children to Heathcote Valley.

The Assistant Principal, in conjunction with the Secretary, enrolls all New Entrant five year olds and arranges pre-visits for parents.

Because our roll has been steadily increasing over the years, the Board of Trustees obtained authority from the Ministry of Education to implement an enrolment zone.  This zone embraces the areas of Heathcote Valley, Horotane and Avoca Valley.  Unless people are living in the defined zone, they cannot send their children to our school unless we decide we have a space for them.  This means that we are able to guarantee a place for all children living in our area or 'home zone'.

The enrolment zone was started in 1994.

New Entrant Transition
For the first six weeks at school New Entrant children finish school at 2.00pm. This period is negotiated with parents and differs in individual cases.

The child:
learns many new routines
learns new skills including storywriting, reading, maths, printing, computer skills, physical education, art, and music
learns in a more structured environment;
learns to be independent interacts in a larger social environment, particularly during the 20 minute interval and the lunch hour. There are over 250 children in the school and the child needs to learn all the associated rules and routines.
