Our 150th Jubilee

From the organising committee… Well, what a weekend!

After nearly three years in the planning and preparation, we are thrilled with the success of the weekend that was the 150th jubilee of Heathcote Valley School. The smiling faces and the endless conversations and reunions of old friends is the most wonderful reward to us all!

With over 500 people registered across different events, we had great numbers attending all functions.

On Friday night the conversazione began with 330 ex-pupils and some current and past residents sharing stories and reminiscing of days gone by. The huge marquee of the netball court in the front of the school was the PERFECT venue for such an awesome events.

Saturday morning welcomed a great sight when two diesel locomotives pulled into the old remains of the railway station where we transported 550 odd passengers on a trip which took them through the tunnel to Lyttelton, up to AMI Stadium where they could change lines and return to Heathcote. A return trip of around 50 minutes.

The Official opening commenced at 1 pm with the arrival of the official party to a traditional Maori welcome – a Whakatau. The school Kapa Haka group supported the speeches and performed with such passion and enthusiasm.

The ringing of the school bell by our three oldest ex-pupils and our current youngest student was very special. Ella Edwards (5 yrs) shares a birthday with two of our oldest pupils!

From there, Cecil Buckley, Ada Thompson and Ellen Pulley cut the jubilee cake to the shares of around 350 guests.

Two very special ex pupils who have contributed much to the Valley and both nearing their 90th birthdays - Ernie Collins and Cliff Read, performed the unveiling of the magnificent drinking fountain, donated by the 150th Jubilee Committee

The Dinner and Dance was held on the Saturday evening where 273 people were treated to a delicious meal from ex-pupil Stu Weatherhead’s business – Moveable Feasts and Stu’s Smokin BBQ. Until 12:30am, the crowd remained and danced the night away to the band ‘About Time’.

The Thanks Giving Service was attended by around 170 people and lead by our very popular VICAR Mary Giles from St Mary’s Church. This was a very special and fitting way to culminate such a fabulous weekend of fun and friends.

Our heartfelt thanks to all the residents, teachers and volunteers who freely gave of their time and assisted us to provide this celebration. This really was a community event and Heathcote Valley is definitely the place to be!
